Vigilance, Solidarity Urged for Houses of Worship

In light of the horrendous mass shooting at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on March 15, faith leaders, law enforcement and elected officials issued a call for vigilance, security precautions and solidarity with the Muslim community to houses of worship. Fifty people were killed during the massacre. Two days after the shootings, alleged White supremacist Brenton Harris Tarrant, 28, is the only person in custody that has been linked to the attack. A number of Southland civic leaders expressed disappointment after the U.S. Supreme Court on June 26, upheld President Donald Trump’s executive order that largely bans travel and immigration from the nations of Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Venezuela and North Korea. The executive order has been termed a “Muslim ban” by critics despite the fact that it makes no mention of religion.
