It’s Officially a `Public Nuisance,’ But How Long Will Carson Odor Last?

The stench emanating from the Dominguez Channel that began fouling the air in Carson and neighboring communities about a week ago has been officially labeled a public nuisance, but it remained unclear today if anything can be done to eliminate the odor, or if residents will have to wait for organic material rotting in the channel to fully decay.  

Chairman Dr. William A. Burke Announces Retirement from South Coast AQMD Governing Board

At the March 2021 Governing Board meeting for the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD), Dr. William A. Burke announced his retirement after 27 years of service on the Board, including an unprecedented 23 years as chair. South Coast AQMD will hold a special election at the April Governing Board meeting to elect the next Chair of the Board. Chairman Burke will officially step down on May 31, 2021. He is the longest-tenured member and the longest-serving chairman of the South Coast AQMD Governing Board.

South Coast AQMD Hires Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer to Elevate Programs and Initiatives

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) hired the agency’s first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer (DEIO). Anissa “Cessa” Heard-Johnson will join South Coast AQMD’s executive management team to develop strategies that integrate diversity, equity and inclusion into South Coast AQMD programs and initiatives.

South Coast AQMD finds justice for Blacks, Latinos and underserved communities

Three underserved communities will soon see improvements in air quality following action taken by the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Governing Board. The Governing Board today adopted emissions reduction plans that will cut exposure to toxic air pollution in the communities of: Wilmington/West Long Beach/Carson; San Bernardino/Muscoy; and Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles/West Commerce.
