After years in fashion and TV broadcasting, fitness has become a life-long pursuit to maintain my health, figure and supple skin. Summer was created to show off our gorgeous skin tones. The best tips we found to keep skin healthy include 2 things, hydrate daily with 8 glasses of water and protect with products containing sun protection factors or SPF.
As promised, beauty expert, Erika Guinn is back. You’ll remember, she annually trains hundreds of make-up artists and beauty industry professionals. Today, Erika is sharing her expertise with You.
Q: Can I swim while wearing a bit of foundation and my lashes?
A: “False lashes will have to remain poolside, they’re not made for the water however,” Erika says, “A waterproof mascara will do the job. There are even waterproof eyeliners that won’t budge or move. There is no 100% water proof make-up, foundation or bronzers, so I suggest wearing a good SPF. “
Q: Do Black women really need sun screen?
A: “We do need sunscreen!” Erika explains, “Our sun protection factor, naturally is about a 13, Caucasians a little over 3, so we do have a barrier of protection based on the level of melanin in our skin however, the leading cause of skin cancer is UVA or UVB exposure.” Ultra Violet Rays (UVA and UVB) from the sun, causes skin cancer, premature aging, wrinkles, sunburn and even eye damage. “There are moisturizers and make-up products which incorporate sunscreen which is great. Use broad spectrum protection (effective against UVA and UVB’s). An SPF between 15 and 30 is a safe number, and if possible, stay out of the sun from 10am to 2pm because that’s when the sun’s rays are the strongest.” Lip care is also important. Erika adds, “Always invest in a great lip conditioner – something that hydrates, makes your lips feel supple and repairs the lips. Mix your lip conditioner with a little bit of gloss and you’ll have duel protection, you’ll have the shine of the gloss with the repair of the lip conditioner.”
From MAC to Cover Girl to Bobbi Brown cosmetics, Erika advises, “Beauty has no barriers, you can purchase make-up at the drug store, or at the department store and find some really valuable products.” Stay beautiful my ladies, hydrate and add broad spectrum sunscreen to keep your skin fabulous.
