The Watts neighborhood has been enriched by a vibrant and colorful mural that represents hope, unity and community as part of the arrival of a new and long-awaited building housing Kaiser Permanente medical offices and Watts Counseling and Learning Center.
Completed by three established artists, the three-stories- high 2,322-square-foot mural whose main facade is on the north facing side of the new building is located on 1465 E. 103rd St.
According to artists who worked tirelessly to finish it in time for the Feb. 6 opening of the medical offices and new home of the Counseling and Learning Center, the mural has come to represent love, as well as community pride over the heritage of the Watts community.
“It’s so big and so vibrant, it’ll be inspirational to many residents,” said artist Michael Massenburg, who’s been painting murals in Los Angeles since the 1990s. “It’s all about love, growth and all of us as community members coming together as one.”

Said artist Jacori “Aise” Perry, who’s painted murals for more than 15 years: “The idea is to bring a focus on something that’s magical, something that brings a smile across the community’s face, something to be proud of.”
Using acrylic-based paint and aerosols, Massenburg, Perry and a third artist, Michelle “Mr. B Baby” Guerrero, spent long hours painting the mural since early December. The focus of the mural revolves around using bright colors representing children and images of people representing the community. They include Mr. Bill Coggins, a well-respected community leader and original founder of the Watts Counseling and Learning Center.
“I believe the mural will be a great inspiration for residents, representing a lot of good in their community,” said Massenburg.
Added Perry: “We were constantly looking to somehow brighten the light around the idea of happiness, playfulness, and inspiring the community to become healthier – physically, mentally and spiritually.”
John Yamamoto, vice president of Community Health and Government Relations, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, said the health care organization is pleased to contribute to the well-being of the Watts community – both from a health services standpoint, as well as artistically.
“We’re committed to partnering with the people of Watts to build a healthier community,” said Yamamoto. “We’re also pleased to have played a part in adding to Watts’ rich artistic history through this incredibly beautiful and impactful mural.”
Lawrence Hines, Jr., 34, a lifelong resident of Watts, said he appreciates the creation of the mural, which he said will be embraced well by residents.
“I like it because it will beautify the community,” he said. “The colors bring out the diversity of the community. It’s beautiful.”
