On Saturday, November 18, 2017, the Los Angeles Alumni, Upsilon & Beta Omega Chapters Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., kicked off what many refer to as The African American Community Social Season with this year’s 81st Annual Black and White Ball. This year’s theme “An Exotic Night In Paradise”, lived up to it’s billing as the distinguished Men of Kappa and danced the night away with their lovely silhouettes and hundreds of other guests from throughout the Southern California.
The event didn’t lack the traditions of years past as the fraternity crowned the 81st Queen of the Kappa Court Ms. Marty Krios, daughter of Getachew and Sara Kiros; she is originally from Ethiopia but grew up in Pasadena and the Inland Empire. According to the organization, Princess Marta is currently in her first year at the University of California at Los Angeles, with a major in Business Economics. She participates in the Undergraduate Business Society, East African Club, and Afrikan Student Union, and hopes to join more organizations where she can mentor and inspire the youth.
Michael Pyles served as the Chairman of the 81st Annual Event. He said, “This year, the bar is raised higher to improve the Black and White Ball, so years from now, the attendance will continue to grow. This year we’re recognizing and commending two very distinguished individuals: Brothers Keith A. Emmons, MD and Leonard C. Ricks, III. These two gentlemen are being honored for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions served, both within the chapter and throughout the community.”
The Los Angeles Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Black and White Ball, in addition to being one of the best and most elegant events of any of the Greek Fraternal Organizations, helps raise funds to support the fraternizes projects throughout the year. Kappa Alpha Psi provides scholarships to deserving young men and women. Kappa Men are committed to achievement, excellence, leadership and community service by improving and addressing the social, economic and educational challenges that impact our communities as well as our nation.
Also in attendance for the evening was Western Province Polemarch Gil Brown, who had this to say about the event, “I’m sure that everyone in attendance tonight will agree with me that the brothers [LA Chapters] have done a fantastic job in selecting an outstanding and talented group of ladies to represent this year’s “Kappa Kourt. I want to Thank everyone for supporting this year’s event and hope everyone enjoyed this Exotic Night in Paradise. Job Well Done Good Brothers”
