On August 21, L.A. City Council President Herb Wesson declared “KJLH Day” in the City of Los Angeles. August 21 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the radio station providing listeners with great music and broadcasting community events. In 1965 at the midpoint of a very turbulent decade in the U.S. a black businessman in Los Angeles, John Lamar Hill, recognized a need for a radio station that spoke to the black community and purchased KFOX 102.3. Mr. Hill subsequently built a studio on Crenshaw Boulevard, changed the station’s call letters to KJLH known as kindness, joy, love and happiness. After nearly 15 years, Mr. Hill sold KJLH to a man appreciated by the community with a tremendous legacy, Stevie Wonder. KJLH and Mr. Wonder continue to live the vision of the station and remain dedicated to the city and people of Los Angeles.
