First United Methodist Church of Compton (FUMCC) will observe 155 years of Christian ministry with a special anniversary service on Sunday, April 23, at 10 a.m., in the edifice located at 1025 South Long Beach Boulevard in Compton.

According to Pastor Arnetha Inge, the anniversary theme is “Jesus is Alive . . . Walk With Him ” based on Luke 24:13-35. The Rev. Stephanie Hoxey, an assistant pastor at Word of Fire Tabernacle Church, will be the guest preacher. Hoxey serves under the spiritual leadership of Pastor Calvin and Apostle Veronica Moore.

“The community is invited to join us for our 155th birthday party and enjoy an uplifting message by Rev. Hoxey,” said Pastor Inge, who added that refreshments will be served following the worship service.

“We want to reach out and embrace every person who has been touched by First Church’s love, teaching, and spiritual activities during these 155 years. So, spread the word and come celebrate with us,” she said.

A native of Compton, the Rev. Hoxey attended FUMCC as a youngster with her parents, the late Maxcy and Mrs. Blondell Filer.  Both of her parents were civil rights activists and longtime members of the NAACP Compton Branch. Her father served 15 years on the City Council, leading many people to refer to him as “Mr. Compton.”  A FUMCC member said, “Pastor Hoxey shares her parents’ commitment to reach back and help others.”
