Presented in partnership with the Ebony Repertory Theatre, An Evening with the Kinseys: Celebrating the Harlem Renaissance is scheduled for Saturday, February 17th, 2018. The program will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the start of this extraordinary era in American history. The Harlem Renaissance ushered in an explosion of African American cultural expression during the first half of the twentieth century. During this period, African American intellectuals, writers, artists, and musicians were renowned for their contributions to world culture.
The event will share fascinating stories that recount how young and talented “New Negroes” like Zora Neal Hurston, Langston Hughes, Alain Locke, Aaron Douglas, Selma Burke, Bessie Smith and so many more collaborated to create art, plays, novels and music during the Harlem Renaissance. In cities from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. African Americans created a collective distinctively “Black perspective and aesthetic” to champion excellence, advance achievement and seek equality and civil rights for African Americans nationally.
The evening will feature compelling performances, enlightening historical reflections, and engaging dialogue. A discussion with Bernard and Shirley Kinsey about the importance of the Harlem Renaissance will be a special highlight of the evening. During their conversation, the Kinseys will share exciting works of art and artifacts from the Harlem Renaissance that have been recently acquired by The Kinsey African American Art and History Collection.
