The interesting and active life of Ernestine Butler came to a close on Dec. 29, after 92 years of dedication to God, family and community.

A celebration of her long life will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m., at Angelus Funeral Home, 3875 Crenshaw Blvd., in Los Angeles.

A native of New Orleans, Ernestine was well-known for her dedicated involvement in community affairs. She was a longtime member of the NAACP, the New Frontier Democratic Club, and the Red Hatters Social Club.

In addition, Ernestine was a frequent contributor to the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum and served on the organizing committee of the LaLa -Louisiana to Los Angeles – Club where she assisted with producing the annual LaLa Festival.

According to her son, Gary Harbour, Ernestine interacted with several notable people during her life.

Harbour said, “She has the pleasure of meeting or knowing Nelson Mandela, Mayor Tom Bradley, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Congresswoman Diane Watson, Vice President Kamala Harris, United Farmworkers of America Co-Founder Cesar Chavez, and singer Lou Rawls.”

In preparation for her homegoing, Harbour added, “She insisted that a repast party be held at her residence after her burial.”
