Baba’s Vegan Cafe is a popular spot known for delicious plant-based dishes. The café, located at 6619 S. Western Avenue in Los Angeles in Council District 8, is owned and operated by Wo’se Afi-Shabaka, well known for his colorful and flavorful cuisine. He not only inspires people to eat well, but also strives to reduce his impact on the environment.
Recently, Afi-Shabaka had the opportunity to make a positive change in the cafe’s operations, all thanks to a pilot program initiated by the Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment Reusable Foodware Microgrant program. This program aims to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills, save money for small dine-in businesses, and support them in purchasing washable, durable, and reusable foodware.

On Friday, October 27, the cafe received a grant of $6,500 worth of reusable plates, cups, cutlery, and other servingware. According to a CD 8 spokesperson, this support not only makes a meaningful difference for Wo’se and his team but also aligns with their commitment to sustainability.

During the event, Albizael Del Valle, the Economic Development deputy for Council President Pro Tempore Marqueece Harris-Dawson, was present to extend his congratulations to Afi-Shabaka  and his staff. Together, with Paul Cobain, LA SAN’s assistant division manager, they unboxed the new, eco-friendly wares, symbolizing a step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Baba’s Vegan Cafe and South Los Angeles.

Interested dine-in food businesses can visit the LA Sanitation Environment website at lacitysan.orgfor more information about eligibility for free technical assistance, training, and help setting up a reusable foodware program.
