Independent presidential candidate Cornel West revealed colleague academic Melina Abdullah as his vice presidential choice on Wednesday, April 10.
CNN captured a statement that elaborated on his decision.
“She has a record of deep commitment and investment in ensuring that poor and working people are at the center of her vision, I wanted to to run with someone who would put a smile on the face of Fannie Lou Hamer and Martin Luther King Jr. from the grave,” said West.
Melina Abdullah is an American academic and civic leader. She is a former chair of the department of Pan-African Studies at California State University, Los Angeles, as well as a co-founder of Black Lives Matter’s Los Angeles branch and Black Lives Matter Grassroots, where she also serves as co-director.
According to the official Cornel West presidential campaign website, Dr. Melina Abdullah joined Dr. Cornel West on The Tavis Smiley Show on April 10, revealing the historic announcement; introducing Professor Abdullah as his candidate for Vice President in the 2024 presidential election. This was considered a key step toward the campaign’s goal of “fighting for a society and world founded on justice, equality, and the empowerment of poor and working-class people of all colors.”
