Today, anyone can be a celebrity and for just about everything: comedy, drama, philanthropy, debauchery, pornography, gossip, backstabbing, slander, etc.
Nothing matters anymore — if you put it on social media and the world loves it, you are a star. You will get followers, in some cases, endorsements and in other cases, a career. Congratulations, you could be well on your way to becoming Babylon’s Next Top Idol (BNTI)!
The world we live in today is depraved and getting worse all the time as we exalt all the things the Lord tells us to turn away from. It isn’t easy, as life has become more-and-more about ourselves and the things we want—most to our own detriment.
People nowadays live for a “like” and “follow” on social media platforms, seeking praise and glory, most for morally bankrupt behavior. There’s one prophecy of the last days that is glaringly true right now—we have become our own idols.
“For men shall be lovers of their own selves …” – 2 Timothy 3:2.
Social media, the internet and television is saturated with people obsessed with themselves and the people who love to watch them be obsessed with themselves.
People frequently make social statements that outright fly in the face of the Lord but it is exalted as truth and wisdom. You see kids imitating some of the vilest behavior and thinking it’s cute and correct — and are encouraged!
But every flesh-and-blood idol hasn’t spent time pushing filth and debased thinking on the masses. Many folks have built themselves up on morally right issues and empowering achievements.
People, upright or not, work hard to keep their empires afloat, I mean really hard and go through hell to maintain it. At the end of the day though, what does it all come to?
“Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.” – Ecclesiastes 2:11.
There are countless preachers, pastors and bishops who are also in competition to be on BNTI. They preach what the congregation wants to hear in exchange for their own personal glorification. They fill their pockets with the money of people who deeply need spiritual encouragement. They take advantage of sin-sick parishioners to fill their egos, church pews and sexual lusts.
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away…” – 2 Timothy 3:5
We are seduced by our five senses and as a result, lulled into our perception of the good life. We can be just as awesome as the world says we are but for God, it’s always been about our heart condition—and it’s wicked.
“Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” -1 Samuel 16:7
It’s time to step off the podiums of our own creation and stand on the Word, which is an everlasting foundation. When we choose to follow Jesus, we shine brighter than any star ever created by His hand. The Lord resides in us and as such must be honored in our conduct and living.
Let’s all strive to be God’s Top Children and not Babylon’s Definite Rejects.
