The Rev. Dr. William “Bill” Thurmond will preach at the Black Heritage Month worship service on Sunday, February 14, at 10:45 a.m., at Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 5300 South Denker Avenue in Los Angeles.

“We extend an open invitation to all to join us as we also celebrate the rich legacy of our forefathers and mothers and hear the Word of God by Dr. Thurmond,” said the Rev. Dr. Solomon L. Drake, senior pastor.

“His calling, past and present, has been to preach, teach and train people for the furtherance of the message of hope to all corners of the earth.”

Dr. Thurmond served as a pastor nearly 50 years before retiring in 2010, leading congregations at Shiloh Baptist Church in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, and Sunnyside Baptist and Park Windsor Baptist Churches.

In addition, Thurmond was the director of Urban Ministries for the Los Angeles Baptist City Mission Society and the director of Black Church Ministries for the American Baptist Church Pacific Southwest. Previously, he was a member of the board of directors for Children Baptist Homes, the Baptist Joint Commission for Prison Ministries, the Los Angeles Council of Churches, and the African American Korean American Alliance. He currently serves on the board of the American Baptist Thelogical Center in Pasadena.

Thurmond is the author of “The Tools of Biblical Interpretation, A Bibliographical Guide” as well as the recipient of numerous awards.

A graduate of the University of Alberta Canada, he earned his Master of Divinity at the American Baptist Seminary in Covina, CA, and his Doctor of Ministry at the American Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley, CA.
