Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is like a baseball pitcher who throws shutouts and pitches no hitters. The big heavy hitters come to the plate and swing to only come up empty, but that is not Mayweather’s game. Instead of having a power game, he is tactical. It’s not always glamorous and it doesn’t make people jump out of their seats, but it makes a lot of dollars and it makes a lot of sense.
Last Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on a Mexican holiday weekend that he has consistently dominated, Mayweather pitched a near perfect game against Robert Guerrero before a crowd of almost 16,000 to improve his perfect record to 44-0.
Displaying many of the fistic skills in his arsenal, Mayweather caught Guerrero with snappy lefts, wide over hand rights and gut checking body shots, blinding foot speed and a steel armor defense to win a clear-cut unanimous decision in a one-sided fight.
It marked the birth of Mayweather’s Showtime Network contract, and halfway through the fight most observers were ready for a knockout, but he said afterwards that he hurt his right hand in the fifth round, which limited his power. But by then he had the Guerrero puzzle already figured out and solved, and Mayweather looked as dominant as ever.
Mayweather came to the ring wearing a shinny gold and black outfit to the tune with Lil Wayne singing ‘We Ain’t Got No Worries’ and one would imagine that after cashing that $32 million dollar check, Mayweather still has no worries.
One shall make no mistake about the magnetic drawing power of Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and it was evident at the MGM Grand Garden Arena as he returned to the ring for the first time in a year.
While Mexicans and Las Vegas tourist were among those who gobbled up tickets like Thanksgiving Turkey for this bout, it was the Black entertainment heavyweights such as mogul P Diddy, rapper Rick Ross, NBA basketball players such as Rajon Rondo, Andrew Bynum, Amir Johnson and Grammy super star Kelly Rolland, who sang the national anthem, who were joined by the who’s who of the boxing community who enjoyed another of his star billings.
Mayweather doesn’t draw like Mike Tyson, but who does? No matter because Mayweather is going to finish on a platform all by himself and richer than any boxer in history.
