The Save Venice community organization will celebrate the many contributions of African Americans and commemorate the 117-year history of Blacks in the historic Oakwood area.

The gathering will take place on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m., on the steps of the First Baptist Church of Venice, located on 7th and Westminster Avenue.  The program will include remarks by Laddie Williams, Dr. Nomi Nightingale, Pastor Oscar Rhone, Eileen Archibald and Sue Kaplan.

For the past four years, the Save Venice group mounted various campaigns and events to preserve the legendary edifice. As a result, Councilmember Mike Bonin recently nominated First Baptist Church as a Historic Cultural Monument. The L.A. City Council approved his motion.

The public is invited to attend the celebration. To learn more, call (310) 663-6694.
