Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, announced Angela and J.C. Johnson, owners of the Serving Spoon, as her guests to the Presidential Address to the Joint Session of Congress on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. The Serving Spoon is an Inglewood community staple.
“The Serving Spoon is an undeniable staple of our community where generations of families have shared meals and laughter,” said Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA). “For decades, the Serving Spoon has proudly served our community, but after the onset of COVID-19 they began to struggle. Like many small business owners across the country, Angela and J.C. were faced with tough decisions. However, with support from the local community, assistance from the paycheck protection program, and other initiatives put forth by the Congress and President Biden, the Serving Spoon is open and cooking up delicious soul food for our community today. I am so pleased to highlight their story of perseverance, the Serving Spoon’s deep and rich connection to our community, and the ways in which President Biden’s American Rescue Plan will help small businesses and our economy recover from this pandemic.”
“The Serving Spoon was established in 1983 and we have been serving great food, as well as serving the community through various outreach and uplifting programs ever since,” said J.C. Johnson. “The pandemic, however, impacted us financially in ways that we never could have imagined – ranging from depleting our personal savings to having to furlough employees. Now, thanks to programs like the PPP, along with the help of Congresswoman Waters, and President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, we have been able to hire employees back and have strong confidence that there is light at the end of the tunnel. My wife Angela and I are honored to have been asked to be Congresswoman Waters’ virtual guests.”
