The Micheaux Film Festival is currently accepting submissions (extended deadline December 29th) for the second annual event scheduled to take place at Regal Cinemas LA Live on Friday, February 21- Sunday, February 23, 2020 and tickets are on sale now. The multicultural festival showcases and celebrates diverse representation both in front of and behind the camera, by providing an outlet for independent filmmakers to showcase their work in a state-of-the-art facility. The event will also feature Master Class workshops, networking mixers, and an awards ceremony.
The festival was named after Oscar Micheaux, a black filmmaker who wrote, directed, produced and distributed over 44 feature films from the 1920s to the 1940s. Micheaux defied racial and economic barriers, while also operating outside of the conventional Hollywood system of commercial financing. The festival is co-directed by Telly award-winning and Emmy-nominated filmmaker, Noel Braham, and Emmy-nominated producer, Courtney L. Branch.
In the spirit of Micheaux, the festival strives to provide independent filmmakers of all backgrounds, cultures, and sexual orientations an outlet to showcase their work. “Our goal is to facilitate a community that fosters diversity, innovation and independence for content creators and the public. We believe that quality work deserves to be seen and recognized, and we aim to provide the platform for artists to do so,” said Branch, the festival’s Co-Director.
The 2018 festival showcased the works of award-winning directors, writers, producers, and actors whose work has gone on to be recognized by Disney/Lucas Films, NBCUniversal, the Emmy Awards (Daytime/Primetime), and Film Independent. The festival brought out more than 200 guests to the world-renowned Regal Cinemas LA Live: A Barco Innovation Center, one of the most technologically advanced theaters in the nation. Festival alumni include Ryan Harris (Centropolis’ “Midway”) Philippe Pierre (HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show”) and Marti Hines (BET’s “Paper Friends”).
The deadline for independent filmmakers to submit their project on Film Freeway has been extended to December 29th. Festival-goers can purchase early bird tickets on Eventbrite.com
