As member of Congress Karen Bass sits on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and is the ranking member of the subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations.
She also sits on the House Judiciary Committee where she sits on subcommittees for Courts, Intellectual Property and Internet and Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and investigations. Both committees have potential of playing major roles in the Trump’s administration’s alleged collusion with Russia and with Homeland Security as it relates to ICE conduct and undocumented immigrants.
The current administration has also provoked the member to create the Sea Change Leadership PAC. A virtual resistance movement that activates, educates and mobilizes. Launched as a political action committee, Sea Change connects community members, activists, and organizations who are ready to resist the Trump agenda. Check Sea Change social media for details on protests, town hall meetings, voter education and registration drives, canvassing opportunities, and the latest news from D.C.
Bass recently hosted a Congressional Conversation in Westwood. This town hall-style event drew about 300 constituents where the aimed focus was on issues of keeping the president accountable and the environment. However, questions from her constituents included domestic violence, the judicial system, North Korea, tons of question on Healthcare ranging from hearing aids to mental illness. Questions were asked about the Democratic party divide, gun control, redistricting and foreign policy.
Bass took questions in groups of 10, provided everyone an opportunity to ask a question and even directed some questions to a one-o- one conversation immediately after the town hall.
The town hall distinctly referenced President Trump as “45” never really mentioning his name. She touched on a recent meeting with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly by stating, “that’s one mean guy, he said he’s going to continue what he’s doing.” When asked about Attorney General Jeff Sessions, she replied to his name, “you mean Jefferson Beauregard, you know he’s named after two Confederate generals.”
When questions arose about Republicans repealing and replacing health care, she encouraged the audience to focus on the women Senators. “The ones that are being locked out”, she stated.
When the question of redistricting came up she referred to former Attorney General Eric Holder’s and Barack Obama’s National Democratic Redistricting Committee, a targeted, state-by-state strategy that ensures Democrats can produce fairer maps in the 2021 redistricting process.
She cautioned that this effort would be more helpful after 2020 and the focus should be to take back Congressional seats now and in 2018. She continued that it’s naïve to believe “45” is going to lose his base in 100 or 200 days. “It’s going to take a while it’s like being in a relationship breakup, make-up and denial,” she stated.
Congress member Bass’ next town hall is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, at Holman United Methodist Church.
