On Sunday, April 27, World Changers Fellowship Church Los Angeles (WCFCLA) in partnership with CBFreeLA (CBFLA) and the Danielle Ashley Group, held the First Ladies Health Initiative 3rd Annual Health Awareness Day at the Proud Bird Restaurant.

The event featured free services such as early cancer detection, nutrition education, dental and HIV screenings, free prizes, Zumba class and live entertainment.

“We currently have our services here at the Proud Bird, we’ve had our services here for four years,” said Shereta Middleton, Chair Facilitator of WCFCLA. “This is our first event partnering with the Proud Bird restaurant and in the midst of having service, we’re doing free screenings.

“We have several providers here that are doing screenings.”

The event was sponsored by Walgreens and presented with numerous health providers and organizations including Systems Training Center, Los Angeles Dental Arts and Fit Body among others. Supporters of the event also included Radio Free KJLH, WSS, Yogurtland, Hope Hop Music Family, DJ Vicious Lee and Hugo’s Restaurants just to name a few. There was also live entertainment and music.

“We also partnered with this group that is a part of our church called CBFreeLA (Curse Breaker Free L.A.) and within their group there are several performances, several different acts, all of them are faith-based,” said Middleton. “So today, throughout the day, throughout the screenings, we’re going to have live performances from anointed artists.”

CBFLA is an outreach ministry and non-profit that believes in meeting youth where they are in life and encouraging them in the Lord. They provided talented youth groups, who gave live performances throughout the event. Founders, Darren and Beverly Paul, along with their daughter, Asha, spoke about CBFLA.

“We come together as a group in unity elevating the young ones to get to a place of doing the same things me and my wife do,” said Darren. “So, this can move on where there is a group of people that knows well what God is about on this earth and they can teach others.”

“Our organization is geared towards art, entertainment, political and corporate arena grabbing a hold of the young and young-at-heart,” said Beverly.

“[We’re] training them up to know that where they are, they are usable for the Lord.”

Their daughter, Asha, is also heavily involved with her parent’s efforts. She is active in the performing arts aspect of CBFreeLA. She intends to use her passion to lift the Lord up and encourage her peers to do the same.

“I am the Free LA [part],” said Asha.

“I’ve always had a passion for the performing arts and every facet of it,” said Asha. “I went to a performing arts high school. After I graduated, I went to [school] for visual communications and design.

“I was trying to figure out exactly what do I want to do in a way of giving back and the Lord placed it on my heart that this is what [I] have a passion for, so I’ll reach and grab a hold of artists and let them know that there are people out there that can support you and create a platform for you to express your talent and your art.”
