Words of the Week: He is the One!

Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:12 – “…Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

David is the chosen, the anointed King! The full text informs us that he is not chosen because of his looks, his education, or his experience. David is anointed as a young man to assume the seat of King after Saul because David had a heart for God and thus beheld the heart of God.

Of all of his brothers, who were probably more fit (image, experience, stature) to be king, the Lord instructs the prophet Samuel that this young, scrubby, sheep-tending young man named David is the one.

Seemingly, David is oblivious to what has just taken place in his life because he returns to his work as a servant. He moves from tending sheep to serving Saul, and then we see him serving sandwiches to his brothers who are on the battlefield.

It is on the battlefield that we also see a glimpse of a King and Man of Valor rise up fearless and faithful when David slays Goliath. But, there is still time before he assumes the seat of King.

In life, we see the unusual unveiling of unlikely leaders. For example, when someone does a single commentary on the news, and the next thing we know, they have their own show. Or the actor that someone takes a chance on by giving them a less attractive role, then they go on to win the Best Actor Award at the Oscars.

Or how about the musical hopeful voted off the talent show, but has an unlikely encounter with an agent and producer and later is selling top Billboard hits.

Yes, we see this kind of unusual unveiling of persons the Lord has deemed, ‘the One,’ and we witness their rise to the top, positioning in high places or election to POTUS – President of the United States.

David didn’t look the part, but he was anointed for the part. He didn’t have prior experience, but he did posses divine authority. He lacked the image, but he held favor. He arrives on the scene without an agenda, but God had a plan. And everything God needed from him was in him.

Quite possibly, you too are the One. The one God wants to use in your family, community, church or globally. Nothing about you says ‘King,’ but maybe, just maybe, you are the One.

Maybe, just maybe, you have been set apart as the one, for a set time in order to accomplish work greater. This doesn’t mean as individuals, we are without fault or error. But simply put, when you are the one whom the Lord has deemed as necessary for the time to serve a greater cause, then you are the one!

This week, we had a choice to make about the one to serve our nation as Commander in Chief. In my consideration, President Obama is the one. Nevertheless, we all had to make our choice.

Some will argue over race, others will argue their political position, and others will look at the financial gain. But, I have cast my vote, last name Obama, for me he is the One!

The Rev. Smith-Pollard serves as program manager of the USC Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement, pastor of Family Ministries at Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church, and dean of the Southern California School of Ministry.
