“A Very Present Help”

By Rev. Darlene Thomas-Moore

Scripture – Psalm 46: 1-11

The Book of Psalms was written and complied over a period of 1000 years before Christ’s entrance into the earth.  The Book of Psalms was used as a temple hymnal and stands as the most quoted and most diverse of Old Testament scripture.

Praise is the most spoken of topic in the book of Psalms. Praise God for His greatness, His wonderful works and His unprecedented power. But when I’m in trouble and can’t seem to see my way through, when I can’t figure out if I’m coming or going or when life’s burdens get too heavy to bear, I can turn to the 46th division and it reminds me that God Is a Very Present Help!

When we are in need of direction and clarity for our lives, it is not the time to turn to the arm of flesh, but it is time to sit down and counsel with God, for He’s a Very Present Help!

According to Matthew Henry’s commentary the 46th division of Psalms encourages the Church in these four areas:

  1. To Trust in God
  2. To Trust in His Power
  3. To Trust in His Providence
  4. To Trust in His Presence

…All in the worst of times.

And I would agree and say that we are in fact living in the worst of times as mothers are against daughters and fathers are against their sons. Children are rebellious, the home is in turmoil, marriages are under fire, and affordable health care is nearly non-existent.

But thanks be to God that there is a remedy, the Lord Jesus Christ!  There should be no doubt in our minds that God “Is”.  He’s Elohiym, the Supreme God.  He’s our refuge, our shelter and our hope in times like these.

God is my Strength, He’s my force and my security. Isaiah 28:16 says, “Therefore thus says the Lord God, Behold I am laying in Zion for a foundation a Stone, a precious Cornerstone of sure foundation, he who believes (trust in, relies on, and adheres to that Stone) will not be ashamed or give way or hasten away [in sudden panic].”

God is Very Present, which suggest speed.  He’s an instantaneous God.  He’s also known as Jehovah Shammah, “The Lord is there”.  Therefore He’s become my companion. Therefore we will not we fear.

It is also important to know that the LORD God Jehovah is a great tactical strategist known as Jehovah Gibbar. Isaiah 54:16 -17 says, “Behold I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper…”

Lastly, “Be still and know”. Not only is this instruction to the believer, but is it a declaration to the enemy to “be still” and see the Glory of God revealed against him in judgment.  It admonishes the believer to “be still” and reverence God.  In other words, God says to acknowledge me and worship me! When you’re in need of His Help you need to WORSHIP! Therefore, instead of worrying about your problem, worship Him since He’s already solved the problem.
