When Clay Takes A Beating

Scripture – Jeremiah 18:1-4
(1) The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, (2) “Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.” (3) So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. (4) But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over. (New Living Translation)

What if a lump of clay had feelings? What if clay had emotions, sentiments or even an opinion?

I believe if clay had a reaction, it would rebel against the process of progress. There would be a mutiny against the course of action required to transform it from a lifeless lump of nothing, into a viable, useful and beautiful vessel of honor.

There is a sensitivity and unique familiarity between the potter and the clay. The potter can see what that lump of clay is to become before he places it on the wheel.

Psalms 100:3 (NLT) reminds us that “He made us, and we are His people…”

A lump of clay has never been self-transforming. The only life the clay has, is defined by the potter.

The potter determines its shape. The potter determines its color and the potter determines its height, texture and even its personality and placement.

If the potter doesn’t like what he sees, the potter has the right and authority to crush it and start all over again. He alone can pound it, beat it and apply pressure to it until it shapes up.

There is a reshaping of God’s people. There are times when we may feel that we are being pounded, pressured and even unfairly beaten. However, this is not God forsaking us, it is simply the potter reshaping us.

Romans 19:20-25 (NLT) says this:
(19) Well then, you might say, “Why does God blame people for not responding? Haven’t they simply done what He makes them do? (20) No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, “Why have you made me like this?” (21) When a potter makes jars out of clay, doesn’t he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into? (22) In the same way, even though God has the right to show His anger and His power, He is very patient with those on whom His anger falls, who are destined for destruction. (23) He does this to make the riches of His glory shine even brighter on those to whom He shows mercy, who were prepared in advance for glory. (24) And we are among those whom He selected, both from the Jews and from the Gentiles. (25) Concerning the Gentiles, God says in the prophecy of Hosea, “Those who were not my people, I will now call my people. ?And I will love those?whom I did not love before.”

Your reshaping may require the feeling of being beaten, pounded and even pressured at times. When you do, here is a thought to help process the progress.

The personality of your progress is defined in the pounding of the potter. Let Him reshape your family, your ministry, your business and your destiny.

And if anyone asks what happened, simply tell them, God is reshaping me.
