Councilmember Herb Wesson’s 2011 “Free Summer Movies in the Park” series was launched last week at the Baldwin Hills Recreation Center, where over 300 community residents enjoyed an evening under the stars with their families.

In addition to the animated movie, “Megamind,” the residents were treated to free hot dogs, candy, and popcorn. The luckiest of those in attendance were the winners in the raffle that included bicycles, skateboards, basketballs, soccer balls, backpacks with school supplies, and for the parents, gift cards to gas-up the car.

“We want families to have an opportunity to relax, have fun and get to know their neighbors,” said Councilmember Wesson. “That’s what summer is all about.”

Wesson’s community partners in presenting “Movies in the Park” this year are the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council, the South Robertson Neighborhoods Council, Community Build, Inc., and the 101 Enterprises Foundation.

The movie series will continue this Friday, July 1, at Reynier Park, 2803 Reynier Avenue, where the animated film “Alpha and Omega” will screen. All of the movies in the series are suitable for the entire family. Festivities at will begin at 7:00 p.m., with the movie starting fifteen minutes after sundown.
