Wesson: Crisis Response Team Needs You
By Sentinel Wire Service

When tragic events happen, who can be relied upon to help?  Who will take charge of locating next of kin, or relatives who can care for a child and avoid placement in foster care?  Who will arrange grief counseling?

In these situations, the LA Police Department and the LA Fire Department call on the city’s Crisis Response Team (CRT) who responds to the scene of traumatic incidents.  These incidents involve deaths, serious injury, homicide, suicide, serious traffic accidents, and multi-casualty incidents.

The CRT is a group of professionally trained individuals who provide on-scene crisis intervention, and attend to the survival and comfort needs, and act as a liaison between victims and emergency personnel.  This is a special group of individuals who take on this important job; a job for which they volunteer.

Councilmember Herb Wesson is joining the CRT in recruiting volunteers for this special group.

“It’s in times of crisis that we find out what kind of community we live in.  Every day somewhere in our city there are people in crisis,” said Wesson. “We need more volunteers to serve this critical need in our city.  So we’re reaching out at this time because our need for assistance is so great.”

Founded 15 years ago, the Crisis Response Team is administered out of the Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety.  Training for new team members will take place on Wednesday, October 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at LAPD Headquarters in Downtown Los Angeles.  To learn more about the Crisis Response Team or request an application email:  Or contact Becca Doten, Crisis Response Team Director, Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti 213-978-0600.

“This isn’t a hobby, it’s a calling,” said Wesson.  “It represents the most rewarding type of community service that we can offer.”
