Who saved the day?

On November 5th, Nidal Malik Hasan decided he was going on a killing spree at Fort Hood in Bell County, Texas. He unfortunately succeeded in taking 13 lives and wounding 31 people. A hero emerged from out of the chaos and stopped Hasan’s rampage. Popular media and other sources named the hero of the day as 34 year-old civilian cop, Sgt. Kimberly Munley. Apparently another side to this story is surfacing that said popular media failed to mention initially.

Sgt. Mark Todd is a 42 year-old, Black retired soldier who also works as a civilian police officer at Fort Hood. Sources say Todd and Munley arrived on the scene at the same time. It’s also been stated that they split up to take Hasan down from different directions. They both came upon Hasan in front of a building structure.

It’s been stated by media sources that Munley, although taking bullets to her lower torso and wrist, fired the shots that took Hasan down. But it has also been stated by sources that Sgt. Todd not only fired the shots that took down Hasan but also saved Munley’s life.

Todd has claimed that he drew Hasan’s attention away from Munley and engaged Hasan. Todd claims he ordered Hasan to drop his weapon and when Hasan failed to comply, opened fire. Todd claims he “neutralized and secured him.” An eyewitness also confirms that events played out the way Todd explained.

Who is the real hero and why was Todd’s involvement so slow to rise to the surface? Maybe as time goes by and the dust settles we’ll get a more, clear picture. I think we can all be thankful for Sgt. Todd and Sgt. Munley’s actions on that horrible day.
