Syvila Weatherford, educated in the Compton Unified School District followed by several advanced degrees, will relocate to the Washington DC area to work as at Patent Examiner in the United States Patent and Trademark Office of Alexandria, Virginia.

As a Patent Examiner, Ms. Weatherford will review patent applications to determine if they comply with Federal law and regulations, in addition to scientific principle. She will be responsible for scrutinizing patent applications, determining the scope of protection claimed by the inventor, researching relevant technologies, and communicating findings and decisions to the inventors and/or their legal representatives. To qualify for the position of Patent Examiner, the applicant must have earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in either engineering or science or possess an equivalent work experience.

Syvila graduated from Centennial Senior High School of Compton, California in 1969. She earned her Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering/Digital Electronics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. After working as a professional engineer for over twenty-five years at such major corporations as Hughes Aircraft Co., Xerox Corporation and Pacific Bell, Syvila decided to make a career change and earned a Juris Doctor from Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, California in 2003. After passing the California Bar to become a licensed California attorney, she pursued her ultimate goal to become a Patent Attorney, which meant she had to pass, an additional bar, the United Stated Federal Patent Bar; which she did in 2010.

With much difficulty Syvila tendered her resignation as Associate Corporate Attorney to her former employer, Aaren Scientific of Ontario, California in May 2010. When asked how she feels about relocating from the Los Angeles area to Washington DC, she says “this opportunity represents a new adventure for me to embark upon and although in a million years I would never have expected to relocate to the east coast, I recognize the immense value the training and work experience this position will provide me as a Patent Attorney. Life is full of new chapters and I have been blessed to be on the brink of another new chapter in my life. And I am grateful that I worked hard so that I am in a position to qualify or be able to embark upon this new chapter.”

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Syvila served as President of the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers, Chairperson of the Western Council of Black Professional Engineers, MIT Educational Counselor or recruiter and served on boards of various charity and educational organizations. “If my life experiences can serve as an inspiration or motivation to others”, remarked Syvila “then my light has shined so that others may see my good works”.
