We Got Black President, Ya’ll
By Danny J. Bakewell Jr. (Contributing Editor)

Do you think it is a coincidence or is it an anointing when you look at the parallels of history tied to the election of PRESIDENT Barack Obama? First, remember that President Obama was not the favored candidate two years ago. It was all but a sure thing that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton was going to be the Democratic Nominee.

But then here comes this young, energetic, intelligent Jr. Senator from Illinois. Now remember that Barack Obama accepted the nomination of the Democratic Party on the same day that Dr. Martin Luther King gave the historic "I Have A Dream" Speech. This was not something staged to celebrate the nomination of the first African American in fact this date was chosen years before when the DNC decided to host the event in Denver. The fact that it was Barack Obama who was the nominee was strictly God's will.

Then Barack won the election forty years to the date that Robert F. Kennedy said "I see a day when a Black Man will be President within the next 40 years." Irony or God's will?

Then the fact that Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony happens and everyone converges on Washington D. C. right on the weekend of Martin Luther King's Holiday and Barack gets sworn in the very next day. Coincidence or God's will?

Well, I believe all of this is part of God's plan. The fact that we had to have a horrible president like George W. Bush in order for America to embrace an African American as the leader of the free world.

But now the work begins, and as Barack said in his Inaugural Speech:

"Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends–honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism–these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history."

So I say to you all, let's remember the feeling we had on this day, let's remember the pride we felt. Let's remember the work we did to get to this place, but let's also remember our President's call to work because these are rough times and it is going to take all of our commitment to ensure that President Barack Obama goes down in history as one of the greatest presidents of all time.

So, whether you agree or disagree, now more than ever I really need your input. I need to hear from you. I need to know what is going on in our community. I also need to know what other stories we need to tell, and what is on your mind. I really do want to hear from you, I want you to "Talk to Danny."
