
The Washington Prep Generals softball team defeated the Crenshaw Cougars 27-12 on May 7. The game displayed how the Generals are dominating the Imperial League.
Washington Prep has lost only four games this season.
Crenshaw got on the board first when Janyah R. hit a sacrifice RBI in the top of the first inning. When the Generals took the plate, they benefited from a two-run RBI single by senior Katherine Franco and walks. Washington Prep ultimately scored 14 runs in the first inning.
“I feel like my batting this game was very good, it was very consistent,” said Generals senior Teaka Evans. “The balls I did hit, they were very good hits.”

In the 17 games that she played, Evans earned a .833 slugging percentage. Her .600 batting average is the third best on the team.

Generals junior Emily Varela hit a home run with her right hand and an RBI single with her left in the matchup. Varela played in 15 games this season, making 38 runs, 34 hits, 34 RBI and two home runs. She paces the team in batting average with .833.
“Her importance is really big, she always hits the ball far,” said Generals senior Aracely Gonzalez about Varela. “She’s a really good ball catcher and she’s a good teammate as well. I appreciate her.”
Franco hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third; the Generals made 11 runs in that inning.
The Cougars got two runs in the second and five in the third.
“I found my hits by really just looking at how the pitcher was throwing the balls to my teammates and keeping an eye on the ball and finding my comfort zone,” said Crenshaw senior Jada Mwaniki.
This game marked the pitching debut of Crenshaw senior Alejandra Rodriguez.
“It was fun, although it’s my first time playing softball,” Rodriguez said. “I hit pretty good but I still need to work on it.”
During this season, the Generals has a 0.443 batting average, along with 228 RBI and 15 home runs as of Friday.
The Generals will battle the Fulton Jaguars in the playoffs on May 21 at 3 pm. The Crenshaw Cougars will travel to battle the Manual Arts Toilers on May 19 at 3 pm.
