Um, Excuse Me… Something’s In My Food!

Unwanted objects continue to find their way into people’s cuisine.

By Brian W. Carter, Sentinel Intern

The Sentinel received a phone call a week ago from a concerned citizen. This individual brought to our attention a situation that seems to happen all to often. They had found a cockroach within their beverage. The discovery prompted an investigation that led to a popular establishment being closed temporarily.

How many times have we seen or heard this familiar story. From hair to rodents to bugs, we keep finding unwanted things in and amongst our food. This kind of happening isn’t acceptable and the concerned citizen mentioned above acted promptly. This is what we all need to do if we find ourselves in a similar situation.

It is up to the establishments to show that they earned that “A” in the window. There shouldn’t be any critters in my coffee, hair in my salad or rats fried up in my bucket of chicken. We have to hold these food establishments accountable. We need to make the restaurants and fast food places aware that they’re not checking the food or the processes of cooking it. We should all notify Health and Safety organizations when we encounter this problem immediately.

These are the food establishments where we either sit down and eat or take on the go. We shouldn’t have to deal with side orders that aren’t on the menu.

To lodge a complaint or report a business you can contact Environmental Health Services at 1- (626) 430-5100 or you can go to http://www.lapublichealth.org/eh/.
