Tuesday Playoff Results

Westchester came into their second round playoff game expecting a tough time against Fremont. Judging by the final score, 75-33, it was easier than it looked.

It started with a 19-6 lead in the 1st quarter and it ballooned to a 44-14 lead by halftime. The lead grew to 40 in the fourth quarter by which the crowd started to head for the exits.

“We did a really good job defensively,” Westchester Coach Ed Azzam said with the understated quote of the night.

Coming on the heels of their 45-point opening round victory against Carson, the No. 1 seeded Comets have made their playoff run look easy but it has comes together thanks to the team’s unselfish attitude.

On any given night, any one of the teams’ talented guards (Dominique O’Connor, Jordin Mayes, Denzel Douglas) could lead the team in scoring or they could get a big game in the paint from someone like junior Dwayne Polee.

The latter happened Tuesday night as senior forward DeShaun McCoy led the way with 17 points and set the tone with his post play.

“This team likes sharing the ball,” Azzam said

Fremont senior Tony Freeland led the Pathfinders with 18 points.

The Comets now find themselves in a familiar spot, having reached the semifinals every year since 2000 – not counting 2004 when they were banned from postseason play following City sanctions.

They’ll face No. 4 seed Cleveland at the Galen Center on Saturday and while the teams have not met this year, the Comets hope that Saturday’s first encounter will be a stepping stone to another visit on March 6 for the City championship.

“We’re just trying to get them out of our way so we can play our last game there,” O’Connor said.
