Trinity Baptist Church Completes its 12th Year of a Successful Summer Youth Employment Program

Baptist Church, 2040 West Jefferson Boulevard in Los Angeles has successfully completed its 12th year of Summer Youth Employment, a program for youths ages 14 to 22. The program is designed to provide a real employment experience for the youths at an early age.

Revered Alvin Tunstill, Jr. introduced this innovative program to the Trinity family in 1997, shortly after becoming Trinity’s Pastor in 1996.  It was a “first of its kind” program here in Los Angeles.  The youth of Trinity and some from Trinity’s surrounding community are paid minimum wage and above for the positions held with local employers. The Church funds this project through its “Army of God” special fund of contributions from the membership and other donors.  The youth are placed as Interns in positions with local employers and businesses to learn and develop skills that will assist them in obtaining gainful employment and functioning effectively in the workplace when they enter the job market.

Prior to the youths being placed as interns into the eight (8) week training program they are first introduced to four (4) weeks of orientation and training by related professional members of the Trinity family.  This orientation and training teaches them; how to dress for success, how to prepare a resume, how to properly fill out a job application, personal money management skills,
and essential work ethics.

Trinity’s successful SYEP has placed over 250 youths in intern positions over the 12 years that it has been in operation and hundreds of others have applied for the program.  This year’s program began on Monday, July 6th, 2009 with the youths enjoying an actual training and work experience thru Thursday, August 27th, 2009.  Orientation workshops and performance reviews were held on alternate Fridays throughout the months of July and August.

There was a program completion celebration on Sunday, August 23, 2009, with a “Special Awards Program” at the 10:30 a.m. morning worship service.  Trinity was presented two Commendation Awards from the City of Los Angeles. One Award was presented to Mrs. Doristine Barbee, former chairperson, for her many years of dedicated service and leadership to the SYEP.   Dr. Rhoushelle Bozeman, present Chairperson, and Deacon Solomon Jones, Co- Chairman, presented each SYEP participant with a “Certificate of Accomplishment.”  Bouquets
of flowers and many “Thank You’s” were given to members who assisted with the 2009 SYEP Program; Laura Farwell, Earl Jones, Carol Irving, Michele Nelson, Cynthia Nixon, Charles Peters, Joan Spearman, Mary and William Crockett, Cathy Mason, Jan Gaskins, and the Trinity Baptist Church office staff, all were honored on this occasion. Previous administrators and assistants who were instrumental in the growth and success of the program in previous years include; Rev. Robert Wilkins, Stephen Roberts, Deborah Collier, Rosalind Turner and the Late Don Griffin.

The Trinity Family would like to thank all the businesses, individuals and organizations who assisted with and supported the program. We praise and thank God for the program’s continued success.
