The Social Network: It Can Be Your Best Friend- Or Worst Enemy

Wellington’s Road

Before putting your name, info and birthday in the required box, ask yourself: “Am I really ready to be part of the social network?” It’s a question I wish people had asked themselves before they joined the fray of people that live on these social hotspots.

Millions of people are on these networks, telling everyone what, who, where, when and why they’re doing positive, negative and straight idiotic stuff in their lives. Sometimes we hear about these people who get fired from their jobs, dropped from schools, or even killed because of their posts.

Now, I’m not trying to scare anyone from joining one of the many social networks out there. They can be very fun and a great way to keep in touch with colleagues, family and friends. I’m just saying to think about it and, if you decide to join one, be smart.

I don’t understand why some folks have to post about where they are every freakin’ moment of the day. Don’t you know there are 24/7 crazies out there tracking your whereabouts? Yeah, they’re on the social networks too, looking for their next victim and you just wrote “bullseye” on your butt when you told them where you were going to be and at what time.

The other thing I don’t get is people doing asinine stuff, like posting pics that are explicit, questionable or incriminating. That’s just what your boss needs to see as ammunition, because you forgot you added him/her as one of yo’ friends, to fire you the next morning.

The social network has privacy and protocols in place to protect the people that have joined their cyber club, but please, be smart. If you aren’t a part of a social network, that’s cool; if you are, that’s cool. I’m just saying, if you don’t want drama, be careful what you say, post or allow other people to see.
