THE LOS ANGELES SENTINEL SENDS BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO NELSON MANDELA, the greatest living statesman, freedom fighter and advocate for peace, freedom and democracy.
In his long lifetime Mandela has transitioned from non-violent activist to militia leader and back again, ultimately spearheading negotiations that led to the country’s first multi-racial elections with full enfranchisement and becoming an icon of peace and democracy the world over which in 1993 earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. WE HONOR HIM ON HIS 93RD BIRTHDAY!
As a fighter for the freedom, justice and equality for Black people and a leader of the African National Congress, Mandela was unjustly convicted and sentenced to life in prison, where he remained for nearly thirty years, gaining support from activists across the world for his continuing and uncompromising demands for freedom and democracy for all Africans. WE HONOR HIM ON HIS 93RD BIRTHDAY!
After his release in early 1990, Mandela again took up leadership of the ANC, heading negotiations to end apartheid and bring about the nation’s first multi-racial elections with full suffrage. Thereafter, he became the first Black president of South Africa, guiding his country through the transition from apartheid and minority rule to true democracy. WE HONOR HIM ON HIS 93RD BIRTHDAY!
Affectionately known as Madiba, in his home country, Mandela retired from public life after one term as president, in 1999–an unheard of feat on the continent–however, he continues to be recognized internationally as a voice for democracy, freedom, equality, peace and harmony–ideals for which, as he said in his trial in 1964, he was “prepared to die.” WE HONOR THIS EXTRAORDINARY HUMAN BEING, NELSON MANDELA, ON HIS 93RD BIRTHDAY!
