The Black College Expo expands to full service as The College Expo with an array of year round services for underserved students and their families to help with college, careers and beyond. TCE returns to Los Angeles on Saturday, January 10, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 South Figueroa Street with an after-show from 4-6 p.m. The expo helps thousands of students and their parents with workshops on such topics as "How to Afford the High Cost of College" and "Planning for College-How to Get In, Stay In and Graduate." Attendees will be provided opportunities to meet with various colleges, including historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and other institutions. Industry representatives will also be actively recruiting students for internship and career opportunities.
The mission of The College Expo and its non-profit arm, National College Resources Foundation (NCRF), is to increase college enrollment among underrepresented youth by connecting students and their parents directly to colleges. Both are committed to providing scholarships, tutoring and mentoring programs, assisting student athletes with college preparation, and connecting students to internships and careers.
With high school graduation rates dropping, and the drop-out rate increasing, The College Expo has taken dramatic steps to work with collaborative partners to lessen this trend by exposing underserved youth to valuable, exciting programs, heightening their interest and participation in getting a college degree and becoming assets to their communities.
The College Expo, which visits seven cities annually include Los Angeles, Oakland, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Washington, D.C. and New York. Now in its tenth year, the expo has helped to increase college enrollment, in some cases by as much as 50% at some HBCUs. As we return to Los Angeles for our tenth year, we're excited about the impact the expos have had, yet mindful of the tremendous work that still needs to be done," says Founder, Theresa Price.
