On Thursday, October 17, Bakewell Media along with law firm, Ivie, Mcneill & Wyatt and Chevy, held a VIP Reception Gala at the California African American Museum for their Taste of Soul [TOS] sponsors, co-chairs, ambassadors and vendors. The event welcomed many city officials, organizations, notables and business executives.

Some of the major supporters and partners who attended the vent included Brotherhood Crusade, Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Office, Radio FREE KJLH, 94.7 The Wave, Bank of America, Chase,  Metro, Chevy, Toyota, SEIU, popular eateries Harold’s & bells and Uncle Darrows.

The event also welcomed and thanked TOS chairs including Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti, L.A. City Council President Herb Wesson, L.A. City Councilman Bernard Parks and L.A. County Supervisor Board Chair Mark Ridley-Thomas. TOS co-chairs were also acknowledged and thanked for their support, which included Congresswoman Karen Bass, assembly members Isadore Hall, III and Reginald Jones-Sawyer, L.A. City Councilman Curren Price, Los Angeles, School District Board Maguerite LaMotte and KCBS Channel 2 Anchor Pat Harvey.

“I just want to take moment to say thank you to all of you, who we refer to as the Taste of Soul Nation, for making the Taste of Soul such an overwhelming success,” said TOS Creator and Founder Danny Bakewell Sr. “We have demonstrated together that our community deserves the best.”

Many of the attendees got to meet and greet with the TOS partners, supporters and vendors at the reception. They shared their feelings about the evening and TOS.

“Being new to the community, we’ve heard so much about [TOS],” said Santos Rodriguez, marketing manager for AltaMed. “We’re really excited to be a part of it, be part of the community and get the community to know a little bit about AltaMed.”

“Taste of Soul is one of the best events in the African American community,” said Attorney Rupert Byrdsong of Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt. “It has become a time when everybody can come together; the community embraces the diversity.

“The richness of the food obviously is a big draw and it’s good that you can see [African Americans] coming together without any nonsense, riff-raff —just people having a good time.”

Compton Mayor Aja Brown came to show her support of TOS and meet with fellow city officials, supporters and vendors.

“Taste of Soul is definitely a colorful, eclectic mix of African American culture and also that of Los Angeles and California so I’m honored to be here,” said Brown. “It’s a great night and it feels good to be out in L.A. with great people and great food.”

Kost 103.5 veteran host and current 94.7 Wave host stand-in for Pat Prescott, Mike Sakellarides, spoke about TOS and what makes the VIP reception and what makes TOS special to him.

“It’s such a beautiful event and there are so many people from the community that are sharing the food, sharing the music—the band is fantastic,” said Sakellarides. “It’s a pleasure to know we have the folks in the city council as well as the supervisors and the mayor behind us too.

“It’s very important that we encourage events that bring families together and on our own streets—and that we enjoy our streets.

“Taste of Soul has been going on eight years and it just keeps getting bigger and more popular.”

“I am very, very proud to be associated with Taste of Soul and so is Metro,” said Miriam Scott Long, Regional Manager Community Outreach & Info Construction Careers Policy. “I recognize how important this event is… and especially want to give thanks to the Bakewells’ for all the work they do

“Glad to be a part of it.”

“It’s our pleasure to be a partner with Danny Bakewell, the Bakewell Company, Los  Angeles Sentinel and Mothers in Action and of course our media partnership with [94.7] the Wave,” said Karen Slade, vice president and general manager. “It’s a phenomenal thing that’s been done for our community and I celebrate and stand with Danny [Sr.].”

“This is my first year as a co-chair, newly elected official and for me it’s an honor,” said Jones-Sawyer. “It’s an unbelievable honor to be part of this but most important to continue the legacy.”

TOS vendors catered the VIP reception with a variety of tasty samples from gumbo to mini turkey burgers and cupcakes to cobbler. The vendors for the evening included Mel’s Fish Market, Magic Fingers, Harold’s & Bell, Glory Foods, Brother’s BBQ, Boone’s Fabulous Fish, Brandiva & Sir Jerk, World Wide Tacos, Chase Cakes, Inspirational Desserts, Mable’s Pralines, Heavenly Delight’s Cobblers, Le’ Sassier Catering and BJ’s Funnel Cake.

The VIP Reception also acted as a launch party for the Taste of Soul Cookbook, which features some ofmm the Bakewell family recipes and dishes from TOS vendors and chefs. Byrdsong liked the idea of the TOS book being a cook himself outside of his busy life as an attorney.

“It’s wonderful,” said Byrdsong. “I like to cook myself.

“I’m always interested in getting new recipes and getting down in the kitchen. I thought about bringing my banana pudding to {TOS] but I don’t have my license.”
