Students Kick Off New School Year with BBQ Event

Harry Lennix, star of the mega hit, “The Matrix”, and FOX TV’s “Dollhouse”, joined a huge throng of students and their families at an exciting back to school festival on Saturday, August 29. The event, held at Inglewood’s Edward Vincent, Jr. Park, offered free school supplies for participating students.

At the same time, barbeques grilled a wide variety of vegan (plant based) dishes which were handed out to hundreds of hungry guests of all ages. This landmark festival was one of the largest events of its kind in this region of the country.

The collaborative event was sponsored by The City of Inglewood, State Senator Roderick Wright, L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Peace In Our World Foundation and The Dwelling Place Church, along with area churches, community members and civic and health organizations. According to the sponsors, free vegan BBQ meals promoted the value of plant based diets and helped to combat childhood obesity and other chronic diseases.

“Our children must be exposed to healthier eating options if we are to reduce the occurrence of adult diseases in pre-teens and teens,” said Inglewood City Councilman Daniel K. Tabor. “Eating a plant based diet is a return to the time when heart disease, diabetes, and most cancers were rare or non-existent. The choices we make now will determine our quality of life in later years.”

Cooking demonstrations gave participants the tools to prepare delicious and nutritious vegan meals. Both children and adults received a variety of health screenings and services including eye examinations, blood pressure screenings and diabetes examinations. Health experts shared a broad range of healthy living tips.

Students of the Inglewood Unified School District were provided with special back to school giveaways including free back packs and school supplies. Musical performers, dancers and special celebrity guests provided entertainment on the amphitheater stage and youngsters enjoyed relay races and exercise games.

Additional sponsors this year included NestlŽ, South Bay Environmental Service Center, Great Beginnings for Black Babies, L.A. County Fire Department, National Health Bureau, Jet Foundation, Earthwise Bags, Turtle Island Foods, PETA, VegFund, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Garden School Foundation, Children’s Dental Center for Greater Los Angeles, National Family Life and Education Center, South Bay Family Healthcare Center, El Dorado Health Center, Community Health Councils, Curtis Tucker Health Center, Providence Little Company of Mary/Vasek Polak Health Clinic, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, National Health Bureau, Angels for Sight, Charles Drew University/Saturday Science Academy, USC CHIP, Hubert Humphrey Medical Center, Youth Justice Coalition, Global Cardio Care, UCLA Center for Prehospital Care and Askia Muwwakkil.

The event concluded with a raffle for dozens of prizes donated by the sponsors. The event was free of charge for the Inglewood community and was held from 10 a.m. until sunset.
