Long Beach City Councilmember and California Assembly District 64 candidate Steve Neal recently announced that he has secured the endorsements of another four major labor unions for his campaign: the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 36; the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1277; and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Locals 33 and 80.
“I am so proud to have the support of such a wide range of Southern California workers, from a diversity of industries in both the public and private sector, and the endorsements of the unions that represent them,” said Neal. “It is a great honor to have the trust of so many working people.”
IUPAT District Council 36 represents over 11,000 painters, drywall finishers, glaziers; floor layers, tradeshow and sign craft workers across Southern California. ATU Local 1277 represents approximately 2,000 bus drivers and other transit workers for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. IATSE Local 33 represents stagehands across the Los Angeles area and IATSE Local 80 represents studio grips and crafts workers in the film industry. These endorsements come in addition to other labor endorsements for the Neal campaign from AFSCME-UDW Local 3930, UNITE HERE Local 11, and UFCW Local 324.
Neal won his first election as shop steward in the Retail Clerks Union Local 324, worked his way up the ranks as a member of CWA Local 9586 to become executive vice president, and served in the LA County Federation of Labor under Miguel Contreras. He also served as executive director of Labor Community Services Food and Emergency Program, a non-profit servicing more than a half million individuals annually. A Compton native, Neal has served North Long Beach on the Long Beach City Council since 2010, where he has an accomplished record supporting neighborhoods, small businesses, and working families as the author and creator of the Long Beach Foreclosure Registry Program, the Long Beach Liquor Store Modernization Program, and the North Long Beach Business Alliance. Councilmember Neal is the Assistant Pastor of S.E.A.M. Faith Family Church. He and his wife, Katonja, live in Long Beach and are the parents of five daughters, one son, and have nine grandchildren.
