Statement on support of legislation to increase the debt ceiling

Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed legislation to raise the nation’s debt ceiling until March, 2015:

I congratulate Speaker Boehner for actually being the Speaker of the House by allowing this essential piece of legislation to come to the floor even though the majority of House Republicans voted against it—showing just how dangerous the Republican majority is that they are willing to risk the full faith and credit of the United States in order to appease their Tea Party constituents.

I joined the majority of House Democrats to support this legislation because Congress must state unequivocally that we will not negotiate away the full faith and credit of the United States, which would damage the American economy and hurt working Americans.

I hope that Speaker Boehner will now allow the House to vote on other legislation that has broad bi-partisan support—including comprehensive immigration reform and legislation to raise the nation’s minimum wage.
