St. Stephen Cantata

Vocalists, musicians and dramatists come together for holiday inspiration at the ‘Sing Joy – A Christmas Cantata’ sponsored by the Chancel Choir of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church.

The free presentation, set for Saturday, December 6, at 6 p.m., and Sunday, December 7, at 5 p.m., will be held in the St. Stephen sanctuary at 1720 North Walnut Avenue in La Puente. The Rev. Anthony Dockery is the host pastor.

“This cantata is held every other year for the purpose of sharing the Christmas story through music, dramatization and hand signing with our church family, guests, friends and anyone within a 50 mile radius,” Psalmist Deborah Barber, who is also the lead vocalist.

“The production is directed by Althea Ellis Reid, a protégé of the legendary contralto, Marian Anderson.  Also, the Chancel Choir and several professional jazz musicians associated with Mrs. Reid will perform.”

The artists include Steve Baxter, bass trombone; Oscar Brashear, trumpet; George Bohanon, trombone; Andrew Carney, trumpet; Ernie Fields, baritone saxophone; Fred Jackson, tenor saxophone; Noland Shaheed, trumpet; and Reggie Young, trombone.

The public is welcome to attend the free cantata. For information, call (626) 917-8541 or email [email protected]
