Social Security Numbers Vulnerable Due to Computer Theft at CSULA

CNS–A computer stolen from a faculty office at Cal State Los Angeles may have contained the Social Security numbers of 232 former students enrolled in classes from 1999 to 2005, the school announced today.

The computer was taken on Feb. 22 from an office in the school’s Department of Mathematics, CSULA spokesperson Sean Kerns said.

The stolen was believed to contain the names, Social Security numbers and grades of students enrolled in the following classes:

— Math 100, 325 and 474, summer 1999;

— Math 472 and Computer Science 270, winter 2000;

— Math 207, 208 and 521, fall 2001;

— Math 270, winter 2002;

— Math 248 and 310, spring 2003; and

— Math 474, fall 2005.

In a March 15 letter, James Henderson, dean of CSULA’s College of Natural and Social Sciences, notified the former students of the incident. A toll-free line was set up to provide information: (800) 883-4029.

“We have no way of knowing if anyone targeted the confidential information on the stolen computer or will use it for any unlawful purpose,” Henderson wrote. “However, this incident may potentially have serious ramifications. For those whose information may be on the stolen computer, the risk includes fraud and identity theft.”

The letter provides information on generating fraud alerts through credit agencies, and other resources on identity theft.

Henderson’s letter warns those affected to be on the lookout for anyone who may call “purporting to represent the university seeking confidential information.” People were urged to report suspicious actions to local law enforcement agencies after notifying credit bureaus.

The university posted information about the problem at .
