Second African Methodist Episcopal Church will present ‘Music of the Spirit Through Jazz’ on Saturday, February 22, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at 5500 South Hoover Street in Los Angeles.

The gospel jazz luncheon will offer a variety of music that celebrates the African-American influence and contribution to these music forms known and played around the world.

“We encourage the community to join us for an afternoon of celebration during Black History Month. I believe you and your family will be enlightened.

Also, I commend Alma Lurry, Geneva McKinney and Fred Stuart for organizing this inspiring and educational program,” said Pastor John E. Cager.

“Music scholars and historians believe jazz began in New Orleans.  Gospel music, from the early 17th century to the present day, has been known for the distinctive vocals, accompanied by group and choral harmonies and instruments.

“A staple in the Black church today, gospel music was used as an early form of passing messages among slaves in the United States,” he added.

Sherwood Sledge and Friends will provide the musical entertainment.  A talented vocalist in gospel, jazz, blues and pop music circles, Sledge’s can be heard on a variety of stage and screen projects.

He received a gold record for his work on the “Roots” project with the legendary Quincy Jones.  Also, Sledge has sung with musical greats such as Patti Labelle, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Lou Rawls, Etta James, Donna Summer and Carole King.

The ticket donation is $40 for adults, $15 for youth ages 11-15 and $10 for youth ages 6-10. To obtain tickets, call Second A.M.E. at (323) 753-2451.
