Former Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson was cleared by a judge today to begin serving as a temporary replacement
for City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, who was suspended from service following his indictment on federal corruption charges.
City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas was suspended from office by a divided Los Angeles City Council today, hours before he entered a not-guilty plea to federal bribery and conspiracy charges stemming from his time serving on the county Board of Supervisors. Ridley-Thomas did not attend the downtown Los Angeles arraignment hearing in person, but entered his plea via video. A status conference in his case was set for Nov. 1, and a tentative trial date of Dec. 14. With funding for additional homeless outreach workers already approved, the Los Angeles City Council today approved a motion to improve the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s outreach program. The motion, which was introduced by Councilwoman Nithya Raman and Councilmen Paul Krekorian and Curren Price, passed 14-0.

The Los Angeles City Council voted today to cut $150 million from the police department’s budget next fiscal year, following weeks of demands from activists to reduce funding for law enforcement.
A Los Angeles City Council committee today advanced a proposal that would require retail employers with more than 300 workers to give their employees more advance notice of their work schedules.
The Economic Development Committee approved a requirement that would mandate retailers to provide employees with a work schedule at least 14 days in advance. It would also require that workers receive 10-hour breaks between shifts and be given the right to refuse changes after the schedules are posted.
Prior to former Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas’ resignation in December 2017, he spent the past four years serving the South Los Angeles community by taking on the state’s homelessness crisis, mental health and environmental issues. Although he is no longer serving in the assembly, Ridley-Thomas continues to be a voice and face of the community.
