Reverend L. Jackson Sr. with the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. led a delegation of members of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition staff to attend the funeral of President Hugo Chavez on Friday, March 8, 2013 in Caracas, Venezuela. Rev Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. along with Rainbow PUSH Coalition offered the following:
“I extend my deepest condolences to his family and along with people around the globe, I am deeply saddened by his passing. During this sad and difficult moment in the lives of all those affected by this unfortunate news, we most always remember that God is our refuge and strength. I join the people of Venezuela, especially the family and friends of President Chavez, in mourning this global leader.
I had the opportunity to know President Chavez in a direct and personal way. I visited President Chavez in August 2005. I had the opportunity to speak to Venezuela’s Parliament on the anniversary of Dr. King’s March on Washington and his “I Have a Dream Speech” and was privileged to receive from President Chavez, the Liberator’s Award on August 25, 2005.
As we mourn the passing of President Chavez, we should now turn to the unfinished business of fighting poverty, forging positive, mutually beneficial relationships, reaching out as neighbors and building a new consensus that can further the cause of global peace, economic justice and equality.”
