Denzel Washington portrayed LAUSD School Board District 1 Candidate George McKenna in The George McKenna Story: Hard Lessons

Denzel Washington portrayed former Principal George McKenna in the (1986) TV drama The George McKenna Story: Hard Lessons. Based on the true story of George McKenna, an educator who faced numerous challenges in becoming principal of George Washington Memorial High School in midst Los Angeles’ gang infested streets where inner-city neighborhoods were being torn apart by gang violence and drugs. Students were more concerned with their survival versus their education. In the film, McKenna was determined to make the high school a safe place but son realized he was facing an uphill battle, having to not only deal with gangs and delinquent students, but apathetic teachers and parents unconcerned by the plight of their kids. McKenna improved the high truancy, campus crime and poor academic performance at George Washington Preparatory High School. He is currently a candidate for the District 1 seat on the Los Angeles Unified School Board.

Magic Johnson’s ASPiRE Television Network Launches on Time Warner Cable Systems in TX

Athlete and entrepreneur Magic Johnson’s network, ASPiRE has launched on Time Warner Cable systems in Texas. Markets covered by the expansion include San Antonio (channel 185), Austin (channel 185), Corpus Christi (channel 499) and Beaumont (channel 499).  ASPiRE is distribution to more than 20 million households. Paul Butler, general manager for ASPiRE, comments, “We are delighted to be expanding ASPiRE’s relationship with Time Warner Cable and look forward to providing their customers in Texas with our great lineup of positive programming that includes original series, movies and sports.” This October, ASPiRE will premiere a new season of its weekly original series “ABFF Independent” hosted by Omari Hardwick (“Power,” Sparkle). The series highlights the best independent shorts, feature films and documentaries from emerging Black filmmakers. ASPiRE will also broadcast a new season of its sports show “Inside The Game.” Earlier this year, ASPiRE premiered an all-new season of its highly popular talk show “Exhale” hosted by five dynamic and successful African American women.   

New Indie Film, Rise Up Black Man seeks to inspire young professionals

Rise Up Black Man is the feature film debut of Kendall Irvin and Jenna McKee. The inspirational film is about friendship and the absurdity of racism. It will be available on DVD September 23. The film follows Gary and Will, twenty-something best friends and recent college graduates searching for direction in life.  Impulsive and wisecracking, Gary cares more about living in the moment than his future.  Will, the more calculated and mature of the two, chooses to seek a higher calling.  Quickly, however, both find themselves on undesirable paths: one is enticed into a world of corruption while the other struggles with personal demons. These two friends learn to overcome their issues in a way that educates as it entertains while communicating a powerful message for contemporary audiences.

Model and actress Eva Marcille and Vibe Magazine recently hosted a private screening of the new action film Lucy at Landmark Theater in West LA. The movie stars Morgan Freeman and Scarlett Johansson who gets trapped in a dark deal then turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. Vibe’s ‘Movies with Milan’ hosted the red carpet with interviews and appearances from numerous celebrities during the pre-reception. Marcille awarded one lucky winner from social media a $100 visa gift card for joining the social conversation using hashtag #LUCYmovieLA.
