“Straight Outta Compton” (Universal Pictures)

N.W.A Biopic “Straight Outta Compton” is Well Underway

The life and career of N.W.A will be brought to the screen through documentary “Straight Outta Compton.” Directed by F. Gary Gary (“The Italian Job,” “Friday”), the biopic will chronicle the rise of the N.W.A rap icons from the Compton area. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are heading the film as producers. “It will be a dramatic story that encompasses hip hop, dope-dealing, Reaganomics, AIDS, LAPD, rap feuds, FBI, PMRC, the Parental Advisory stickers on the records … all of it,” Ice Cube told London’s The Guardian. Ice Cube will be played by his son O’Shea Jackson, Jr. The film’s expected release date is August 14 2015

Disney Star Zendaya to Play Aaliyah in Biopic

“Replay” singer Zendaya Coleman will play the late singer Aaliyah in an upcoming television movie on Lifetime.  The film is based on the book “Aaliyah: More Than a Woman” by former Time magazine music editor Christopher Farley. Aaliyah who was known for hits “One in a Million” and “More Than a Woman” died in a plane crash along with eight others in the Bahamas after filming the music video for single “Rock the Boat.” She was 22.  The 17-year-old Zendaya is known for being on Disney show “Shake it Up!” and as a contestant on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2013. Coleman who is excited for the new project tweeted: “She’s been an inspiration and influence in my whole career, her talent still shines brighter (than) ever, all I wanna do is honor her.” Although this comes as great news for the actress, Aaliyah fans and critics have spoken out against Lifetime’s decision in casting Zendaya. Many doubt her physical appearance in playing Aaliyah, as Coleman is of mixed heritage.  The singer responded to the backlash stating “A lot of people say I’m not Black enough. Half Black is just enough.” She continued, referencing biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, saying “it doesn’t matter what color you are, it’s about how you portray the character, she ended her statement, “for those that don’t know Angela Bassett and Tina Turner, they look nothing alike but she was that character so I think that’s what it’s all about.”
