Double Deluxe, Listen Up: Raheem DeVaughn Releases “The Love & War Masterpeace”
In the relaxed atmosphere of a private CD listening party, I had the distinct pleasure of pressing play to Raheem DeVaughn’s new album, The Love & War Masterpeace. Immediately, my attention was caught up in a rhythmic introduction of scholastic wisdom by Dr. Cornel West. How many R&B albums do you know have Dr. West PSA’s flowing? I found myself and others moving through a spectrum of reflections intertwined with conscious conversations of Love, War and Relationships.
Countless ‘Radio Raheem’ supporters cite him as being the Marvin Gaye of our era. When you experience the junior-double deluxe classic, you will hear progressive messages in tracks such as: Bulletproof (feat. Ludacris) and Nobody Wins A War (feat. Jill Scott, Bilal, Anthony Hamilton, Ledisi, Algebra, Chrisette Michele and more); In the same breath, your soul’s gratification will be captured by the sensual vocal vibrations of Garden of Love; Mr. Right and his current single I Don’t Care.
Following his live performance on the Steve Harvey Morning Show (KJLH, 102.3FM) in Los Angeles during his promotional radio tour at the Baldwin Hills Mall, I had the opportunity for a quick conversation with Mr. DeVaughn in between interviews about his new ‘Masterpiece’ .
Maleena: What do you want fans and new listeners of your music to walk away with after listening to your album?
Raheem DeVaughn: My goal, My purpose for my music…I want music to take a higher consciousness. I want women to feel empowered, encouraged, beautiful and ultimately I want them to feel love. For the times we are living in, I want to bring people together.
Maleena: What inspired you to create The Love & War Masterpeace?
Raheem DeVaughn: I had a dream. Then, I started working on it the next day! Inspired by hard times this country is in, inspired by the beauty—Capturing all that at the same time, it’s a fun time. I wanted to create a soundtrack.
Maleena: The whole album or specific track?
Raheem DeVaughn: The whole album. The album is a Soundtrack and Anthem. Through it all, tracks/songs like ‘Revelations 2010’ (feat. Damian Marley) and even ‘Wing and a Prayer’ with Bun B…You can talk to many people but talk to God and stay prayed up. Another one is ‘Black & Blue’. It’s geared toward women so they can let their inner light shine. It’s a song against domestic violence. My ‘Woman’ Part II anthem.
Maleena: Dr West, Why did you choose Dr. West to be a part of this project?
Raheem DeVaughn: I think when you are a speaker and I have been doing this for fifteen years…you must be able to articulate. And I have to articulate just as much as I record. You know, make every word count. And I chose Dr. West because of his infectious Spirit. The power of the Word.
Maleena: We’re running out of time, thank you for taking time out, this is a dope album powerful project. Keep doing what you do, Sharing your gift with the world. Peace.
Raheem DeVaughn: No doubt. Thank you and my Tour begins in Spring 2010. Give thanks to Raheem DeVaughn, the “R&B Hippie Neo-Soul Rock Star” for taking time out to chat with the LA Sentinel as he continues to accomplish the art of consistency comprised in The Love & War Masterpeace. When there is so much to say about a quality album covered by a genuine artist who crosses generational lines, the only suggestion one can offer is, “You gotta have this album”.
