Police-Clergy March to Help Those in Need

LAPD-Clergy March

More than 110 clergy people and concerned citizens joined a second LAPD Walk and Talk march along Figueroa Street on January 30 “to address and improve the quality of life for women and men there,” said Officer Dawson Hill of the LAPD Southeast Community Police-Clergy Council.

Starting at 96th Street, a diverse band of African-American and Latino citizens, including residents from El Salvador, Guatemala and Belize, reached out to the homeless, prostitutes, abused, and other people ‘on the street’ with information designed to change or improve their lives.

The nearly three-mile journey continued for about two hours to Imperial Highway, then back.  Then, ministers offered prayer and shared the Word of God to those who desired.

“The clergy played a major role in this march,”  Hill said.  “They must be part of the solution in this community.”

Hill also said inspiration for the march came from the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream and “renewed hope” resulting from President Barack Obama’s re-election.

The first march down Figueroa Street was held last spring.
