Steven Conaway has been selling roasted peanuts for over 30 years.
You scream…I Scream…We All Scream For…Peanuts? Hot-roasted peanuts on Crenshaw seem to be the order of the day.
It’s a little red-and-white truck that sits nicely tucked in the center of the 3800 block of Crenshaw Blvd. This truck draws a crowd and fills the air with the smell of roasting peanuts. It’s commonplace to see folks walking down Crenshaw with a fat, paper bag in hand and peanut shells on the ground nowadays.
Steven Conaway is the ‘Peanut Man’ and the culprit behind the peanut, snackin’ craze. Originally from Oxnard, Ca, Conaway has a long history with peanuts. He was selling peanuts with a partner in Compton, Ca 30 years ago. He eventually decided he was going into business for himself.
One day, after a chance meeting with his old partner’s son, he was provided with a peanut roaster. Now all he needed was a truck… and it just so happens that luck would strike again as a truck became available. He didn’t have enough money for the truck, but the price he offered got him the truck anyway. Now he was in business.
He arrived on Crenshaw Blvd in September 2011 and set-up shop right in the heart of the busy block. When asked why people go crazy over his peanuts, Conaway responded, “I would like to know the answer to that myself.”
He continued, “I’m very happy that they are liking them and know, 30 years ago when I was roasting them, people like them back then.”
The peanut truck brings people passing by, going to work, or shopping in the area just by the smell of roasting peanuts alone. He also sells pistachios, almonds and other munchies to satisfy those snack attacks.
Conaway gets up to 30 customers a day…but don’t worry he has plenty of peanuts for you and yours. He would like to thank his local clientele for their continued business.
“I want to say thank you for being my customer,” said Conaway. “I hope you keep coming—I hope you keep liking them.”
The peanut man is located on the 3800 block of Crenshaw Blvd in the red-and-white truck. You can’t miss him.
