The 12th Annual Pastor’s and Lay Leadership Conference begins Friday, January 28 and continues Saturday, January 29, at Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church, 46 Maxwell St., in Irvine.
“We invite everyone to come out to this event. We will have two days of teaching on church leadership, church growth, evangelism, church finance, youth ministries and community outreach initiatives,” said Rev. Mark Whitlock, host pastor.
The conference is co-sponsored by the University of Southern California and the Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles and Vicinity. Rev. Dr. Marvis Davis is the president of BMC.
Headlining the program are Bishop T. Larry Kirkland Sr., presiding prelate of the 5th Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church; Bishop Noel Jones, founder and pastor of City of Refuge in Gardena; Rev. Xavier Thompson, pastor of Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, and Rev. Dr. Floyd Flake, pastor of Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral in Jamaica, NY.
“These proven church builders will share resources and models of ministry for a systemic approach to church growth and development. God worked through systems. There is a process for salvation and there is a process for leadership, church management, church growth, and church maintenance.
These systems will be shared on Friday and Saturday,” he said.
Other leadership speakers are Rev. Dr. Cecil “Chip” Murray, Professor of Religion at USC and retired pastor of First A.M.E. Church-LA; Dr. Lula Ballton, co-founder and CEO of West Angeles Community Development Corporation; Rev. Dr. Kelvin T. Calloway, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church – LA; Rev. Dr. Steve Johnson, CFO of Faithful Central Bible Church; Rev. Dr. Francine Brookins, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church – Fontana..
Additional sessions will be instructed by Rev. Hermia Whitlock, Attorney Scott Chaplin, Rev. Charles Dorsey, Rev. DeWayne Knox, Edward Thomas and Rev. Mark Whitlock, who added, “We will also have bankers there to provide financial tips on loans and grants.
“Our goal is to offer, not just inspiration, but also resources for church leaders, as well as lay leaders who are not ordained, to help guide God’s church in the 21st Century.”
