Park Hills & The R.O.C.K. Churches

Over 80 students, from ages 3 through adults, from two churches and the community were blessed by participation in the Vacation Bible School (VBS) ministry on the campus of the Park Hills Community Church, (Reformed Church in America) and The R.O.C.K. Church (“Reaching Out Christ’s Kingdom,”) in View Park, California.

In addition, forty dedicated members from both churches served as teachers and assistants in the five classrooms, and in the preparation of the snacks and delicious lunches.  Deacon Jessica Collins served for the sixth year as the Director.

This year’s VBS theme, ‘Adventures on Promise Island’ was carried out throughout the weeklong event in all the activities from classroom lessons to skits, crafts, snacks, and decorations.  The 5 principles of the theme, presented on each subsequent day, were based on God’s Promises: “I am with you;” “I care about you;” “I give you what you need;” “I will save you;” and “I will answer you.”

A highlight of the event was the visit and presentation by Delbert Cannon, a counselor from the California State Department of Rehabilitation.  From his wheel chair, he described how his disability resulted from wrong decisions he made as a teenager. The young audience reacted with interest, asking thought provoking questions.

The Rev. Lawrence K. Dove, recently installed minister of Park Hills, led the adult class and shared the daily opening and closing devotions with Pastor Peter Watts of the R.O.C.K., who stated, “I was impressed with the young people as they sang the stirring song, ‘Faithful is My God’ each morning.”

The parents were invited to the culmination program where the youth classes made presentations demonstrating what they had learned. “VBS allows us to invest in the future and destiny of kids since they represent the future leaders of our community and country,” said the Rev. Dove.

There was a deep sense of joy for all during the entire week and on the following day when the VBS families and the church family joined with Pastor Larry and First Lady Yolanda Dove in a fun-filled day at the annual Park Hills picnic and block party.

The community is invited to share in worship with Park Hills on September 19, at 11 a.m., and participate in ‘National Back to Church Sunday.’  The church is located at 5247 Overdale Drive, on the corner of Overhill and Northridge Drives, in Los Angeles.  Call (323) 294-1421 for information.
